Dr Ruth McCutcheon

BA Hons, M.Phil., MSc, D. Psych Training Programme Director, supervisor and therapist.

Ruth is a Counselling Psychologist and fully certified Schema Therapy Trainer, Supervisor and Therapist with the International Society for Schema Therapy. She delivers accreditation training courses for Schema Couples Therapy and Schema Therapy for Individuals. Ruth has also presented at the International Society for Schema Therapy conferences. Recently, she has released a podcast ‘Every Part of Us’ with her colleague Ruth Holt, interviewing experts in the Schema Therapy for Couples field on topics such as affairs, addictions and enmeshment.

In her work with couples, Ruth feels passionately that with the right therapeutic approach couples can be guided to find a deep and satisfying connection together. Schema Therapy for Couples offers a powerful framework to achieve this.

Ruth is also an accredited in CBT with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP) and set up a special interest group in Schema Therapy with the BABCP. She continues to offer training and works full time and offers supervision to Psychologists, psychotherapists and CBT therapists.

When delivering couples therapy or working with individuals, Ruth offers interventions for a range of psychological issues including betrayals and complex early life trauma. She is also a visiting lecturer on the a few London based doctoral programmes where she provides teaching in Schema Therapy

During 25 years of clinical practice, Ruth has experience of working in both private and NHS settings, including primary and secondary care healthcare and forensic communities. Her work in primary care involved seeing individuals, families and couples, including running post natal depression groups.  Ruth also has an interest in working with young people developed in her work in a Child and Adoloscent Mental Health team. She also set up a Counselling Psychology service in a primary and secondary school in 2022. This involved supporting children and young people to explore a wide range of issues including perfectionism, eating disorders and sexuality.

Ruth lives at home in London with her partner of 22 years and her teenage daughter and son.
